Healing the Wounds – Torture Treatment Centers Around the World

Please join the Congressional Human Rights Commission (TLHRC) for a hearing on survivors of torture and their struggle to overcome not only the physical abuse of torture, but the long-term psychological trauma with the help of multi-disciplinary treatment centers.

Although exact figures are difficult to discern, according to Amnesty International, an estimated 117 countries worldwide still practice torture. China, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and Guatemala are just a few examples of countries in which cases of torture are routinely reported.

An estimated 500,000 foreign torture survivors reside in the United States and as many as 100 million exist worldwide. More than 200 treatment centers operate internationally with the sole purpose of providing crucial services to torture survivors. The Center for Victims of Torture in Minnesota was the first of its kind in the United States and the third torture victims’ center in the world. Currently, there are 25 torture treatment centers in the U.S. that are members of the National Consortium of Torture Treatment Centers.
