Please join the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission for a briefing on the human rights situation in Georgia.

Relative to many countries in the post-Soviet space, Georgia has made significant progress in battling corruption and ensuring the efficient provision of public services to citizens. However, in the run-up to parliamentary elections in October 2012 and the presidential elections in 2013, there are growing concerns about freedom of expression, labor rights, the independence of the judiciary, the government’s misuse of administrative resources to build political support and violence against opposition parties.

The panelists will provide an overview of the human rights situation and the state of democracy in Georgia and assess the potential effects of the upcoming elections on human rights in the country.
